GotG vol. 3 is happening! With the Guardians being in Avengers: Infinity War, it’ll likely be coming out in 2019-2021. James Gunn will be back to write/direct it! Either way, it’ll be huge! Just coming off of their meeting with the Avengers, plus Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and others… There’s going to be one particular thing that’ll need to happen. The Infinity Watch.
With Infinity War being based off of one of my favorite comic book stories in Infinity Gauntlet, the Infinity Watch took place afterwards, led by Adam Warlock, whose big giant green egg was shown in the Collector’s place in Guardians of the Galaxy. Infinity Watch was right after Thanos was defeated, and the Infinity Gems, or Stones in the movies, needed to be separated and hidden away. The six members were guardians of the Infinity Gems, which were each given to a single member in order to safeguard against anyone else assembling them into the Infinity Gauntlet. With there being five main Guardians of the Galaxy members in, Starlord, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Drax, there’s another spot needed. Thanos actually became a good guy and was one of them!
How could this work out into a movie you ask? Well for starters Warlock wasn’t in his right mind due to the Gauntlet’s influence. He gave the gems though to the members, including Thanos because he reached a sense aof humility after he was defeated. Thanos eventually left the Infinity Watch, but kept his gem safe! That likely won’t happen in the movie, but I’m guessing that Man-Beast, like in the comics, or a more threatening/popular villain, will capture/battle the members leading for Warlock to help save them.
This would be an amazing concept for a movie! Considering that James Gunn is a huge comic book fan, I get he’s read the Infinity Watch before, and knows the importance of this story. It would be a great third ensemble to the Guardians of the Galaxy!
